It is said that in 1081, the shrine was built on the middle slope of Mt. Yahazugatake after receiving a share of the god from Usa Hachimangu Shrine in Oita. It was later moved to its current location in 1533. When Shogun Ashikaga Yoshitane of the Muromachi Shogunate was driven out of the capital and attacked Kyoto, he performed a dance at Usa Hachimangu Shrine, and this is said to be the beginning of the Koshiwa Dance.
