Miyama [village] - Miyama

Japanese: 美山[村] - みやま

A village in Hidaka County, central Wakayama Prefecture. Population 2,262 (1995). Located in the Kii Mountains, it is surrounded by mountains with altitudes of 800 to 1,000 meters. The Ubuyu River and the Atai River flow into the Hidaka River, weaving between the mountains. Most of the village area is covered in forest, and forestry is the main industry. Building materials such as cedar and cypress are produced, and shiitake mushrooms are also cultivated. Depopulation has been progressing since the 1950s. At the northern foot of Mt. Seirei (878m) in the southwest of the village area is the prefectural multipurpose dam Tsubaya Dam (completed in 1988), which holds back the waters of the Hidaka River.

和歌山県中央部，日高郡の村。人口2262(1995)。紀伊山地にあって，周囲には標高800～1000m級の山が連なり，日高川に，山間を縫って初湯（うぶゆ）川，愛（あたい）川などが流入する。村域のほとんどが森林に覆われ，林業を基幹産業とし，杉，ヒノキなどの建材を産出，シイタケ栽培も行われる。昭和30年代から過疎化が進んでいる。村域南西部の清冷（せいれい）山(878m)北麓に，日高川の水をせき止める県営の多目的ダム椿山（つばやま）ダム(1988完成)がある。
