Higher alcohol - Higher alcohol

An alcohol with a large molecular weight. Usually refers to aliphatic alcohols with 12 or more carbon atoms. It is esterified with fatty acids and exists widely in animals and plants as a wax. It can be obtained by saponifying wax with concentrated sodium hydroxide or by reducing higher fatty acid esters. It is a waxy neutral substance that is insoluble in water. As the number of carbon atoms increases, it becomes less soluble in organic solvents. Cetyl alcohol C ₁₆ H ₃₃ OH is obtained from spermaceti, ceryl alcohol C ₂₆ H ₅₃ OH from China wax, and myricyl alcohol C ₃₀ H ₆₁ OH from beeswax. It is used as a raw material for surfactants, plasticizers, and synthetic lubricants.

分子量の大きいアルコール．普通，炭素数12以上の脂肪族アルコールをさす．脂肪酸とエステルになって，ろうとして動物，植物内に広く存在する．ろうを濃厚な水酸化ナトリウムでけん化したり，高級脂肪酸エステルを還元すると得られる．ろう状の中性物質で，水に不溶．炭素数が大きくなると有機溶媒にも溶けにくくなる．セチルアルコールC₁₆H₃₃OHは鯨ろうから，セリルアルコールC₂₆H₅₃OHは支那(しな)ろうから，ミリシルアルコールC₃₀H₆₁OHはみつろうから得られる．界面活性剤，可塑剤，合成潤滑油の原料に用いられる．
