A perennial plant of the genus Fritillaria in the family Liliaceae. Although it is called lily, it is not a lily. It has been the source of many legends since ancient times, and is highly valued as an alpine plant. It grows in alpine grasslands from central Honshu northward, but also grows in colonies on the coasts from Hokkaido northward. The bulbs are white and oblate, 1.5-3 cm in diameter. The stems are erect and 20-30 cm tall, with 4-5 leaves arranged in 2-3 tiers in the middle, and several leaves arranged alternately at the top. The leaves are lanceolate, 5-8 cm long, without petioles, and slightly blunt at the tips. In July, a single broad bell-shaped flower hangs downward at the top of the stem. It is about 3 cm long, dark purple, and has a certain odor. It is distributed from Kamchatka, the Kuril Islands, Sakhalin, and the Ussuri region to Alaska, and its bulbs are used as food by indigenous people. Plants in this genus include Fritillaria or Fritillaria japonica. Source: Encyclopaedia Britannica Concise Encyclopedia About Encyclopaedia Britannica Concise Encyclopedia Information |
