Duckweed - Duckweed

Japanese: ウキクサ - うきくさ
Duckweed - Duckweed

A floating annual plant of the Lemnaceae family (APG classification: Araceae). It is also known by other names such as Kagamigusa and Nakimonogusa. The plant may grow alone or in colonies of several. The thallus is flattened and broadly obovate, 3-10 mm long and 3-8 mm wide, green on the upper surface and purple on the underside and edges, with 5-11 palmate veins. About 10 roots, each 5-8 mm long, hang down from the center of the underside of the thallus. There are two budding sacs on both sides of the base of the thallus. The inflorescence consists of two male flowers and one female flower, surrounded by membranous bracts. It is distributed all over the world except South America, including all of Japan.

Lemna aoukikusa Beppu et Murata ( L. perpusilla Torr.) is small and similar to duckweed, with a thallus 3-6 mm long, 2-3 mm wide, 1-3 veins, and a single root. It is distributed from Hokkaido to Honshu.
