An indigenous people of the Guajira Peninsula, facing the Caribbean Sea in northeastern Colombia. Population: about 50,000. Soon after contact with the Spanish in the early 16th century, they introduced livestock farming, and by 1550 they had already become nomadic pastoralists, grazing cattle, goats, sheep, donkeys, and other animals. They produce milk, butter, and cheese from cows and goats, and these and goat meat are their staple foods. They also do some farming, growing manioc, sweet potatoes, corn, and other crops.
