Raman

Japanese:
Raman

Indian physicist. His father was a mathematics and physics teacher, and he inherited his interest in science and musical instruments from him. He studied at the University of Madras, where he thoroughly read books on acoustics by JWS Rayleigh and HLF von Helmholtz. As scientific research careers in India at the time were not considered promising, he worked for the Ministry of Finance for 10 years. During that time he continued his theoretical and experimental research into musical instruments, and in 1917 he was appointed professor of physics at the University of Calcutta in recognition of his work. In the early 1920s he shifted his focus to optics, and experimentally discovered why light scattered from pure glycerin is green rather than blue. This Raman effect was recognized as the foundation of quantum theory, and in 1930 he was awarded the Nobel Prize in Physics. In 1934 he founded the Indian Academy of Science, serving as its president, and contributed greatly to the rise of science in India.

Rayleigh(レイリー)とH.L.F. von Helmholtz(ヘルムホルツ)の音響学書を熟読した.
