A city in Novara Province, Piedmont, northern Italy. Population 20,069 (1981). Located in a basin at an altitude of 272m where several valleys in the Alps converge, its origins date back to Roman times. With the completion of a railway tunnel through the nearby Simplon Pass on the Swiss-Italian border in 1906, the city became an important transportation point in Europe, and its population increased.
