…In 1644, German Jesuit priest A. Kircher invented the magic lantern, which quickly slid two glass paintings back and forth to project moving images, such as a glutton turning into a pig. In Japan, inspired by a spectacle called the Dutch Ekiman Mirror, which used a magic lantern brought by the Dutch during the Edo period, Koishikawa dyeing and overglaze painting craftsman Kameya Kumakichi, with the help of his friend, doctor Takahashi Genyo, completed his own machine using the same mechanism, and under the name Ikeda Toraku, he performed a seedboard-style magic lantern performance called Utae at a comedy hall in Edo in 1803 (Kyowa 3). This was a performance in which colored pictures painted on glass (seedboards) were placed on several magic lanterns (floors).…
