Japan's first rockfill dam is located in the upper reaches of the Isawa River in southwestern Iwate Prefecture. It was completed in 1953 (Showa 28) as part of the Kitakami River Specific Area Development. The dam is 53 meters high, 345 meters long, has a flood area of 1.1 square kilometers, and a maximum output of 28,000 kilowatts. It is a multipurpose dam that serves both flood control, power generation, and agricultural water supply. Since its completion, it has irrigated approximately 60 square kilometers of cultivated land, mainly in the Isawa alluvial fan, and opened up 12 square kilometers of new farmland, making it one of the prefecture's leading rice-producing areas. A prefectural road connects it to Akita Prefecture, and it is included in Kurikoma Quasi-National Park, so tourism development is expected.
