Kankiji Temple

Japanese: 歓喜寺 - かんぎじ

This temple is located in Kanaya-machi, Arida-gun, Wakayama Prefecture. It is called Raigyo-san. It was built in the birthplace of Myoe Shonin Takaben, who is known for reviving Kegon Buddhism, by Myoe's disciple Yoshibayashi-bo Kikai, in memory of his master's virtues, with the cooperation of Saemonnojo Muneshige, the third son of Yuasa Munemitsu (Myoe's mother's brother). It converted to the Jodo sect during the Genroku period (1688-1704). It houses a wooden seated statue of Amida, an Important Cultural Property said to have been made by Genshin, and next to the temple stands a wooden sotoba (stupa) built by Kikai in 1236 (Kasei 2), which was later converted to stone.

和歌山県有田郡金屋町にある寺。来迎山と号す。華厳教学復興で知られる明恵上人高弁の生誕地に明恵の高弟義林房喜海が，師の遺徳をしのび土地の豪族湯浅宗光(明恵の母の兄)の三男左衛門尉宗氏の協力を得て建立したという。元禄年間(1688‐1704)，浄土宗に改宗。源信作と伝える重文の阿弥陀木像座像を蔵し，また寺のかたわらには，1236年(嘉禎2)に喜海が建てた木卒塔娑（そとば）を後に石に改めたものが立っている。
