Died January 4, 1913. Berlin. German army officer. Known as the creator of the Schlieffen Plan, which became the basis of German strategy in World War I and World War II. He initially studied law, but joined the army in 1854, became a member of the General Staff in 1865, and fought in the Prussian-Austrian War (1866) and the Franco-Prussian War (1870-1871). He later gained fame as the commander of the 1st Lancers Regiment, and was promoted to Chief of the Military History Section of the General Staff in 1884, Deputy Chief of Staff in 1888, Chief of Staff in 1891, and Field Marshal in 1911. As Chief of Staff, he worked on creating operational plans for France and Russia and training staff officers, and was known as a brilliant chief of staff. His tactical theory was widely studied throughout America and Europe, and had a great influence.

ドイツの陸軍軍人。第1，2次世界大戦でドイツ戦略の基礎となったシュリーフェン・プランの立案者として著名。初め法律を学んだが，1854年軍に入り，65年参謀本部員となり，プロシア＝オーストリア戦争 (1866) ，普仏戦争 (70～71) に出征。その後第1次槍騎兵連隊長として名声を博し，84年参謀本部戦史室長，88年参謀次長，91年参謀総長，1911年元帥となった。参謀総長として，対フランス，対ロシア作戦計画の作成や参謀将校の育成に努め，名参謀長といわれた。また彼の戦術論はアメリカ，ヨーロッパを通じて広く学ばれ，大きな影響を与えた。
