Born: February 28, 1833, Berlin Died January 4, 1913. Berlin. German army officer. Known as the creator of the Schlieffen Plan, which became the basis of German strategy in World War I and World War II. He initially studied law, but joined the army in 1854, became a member of the General Staff in 1865, and fought in the Prussian-Austrian War (1866) and the Franco-Prussian War (1870-1871). He later gained fame as the commander of the 1st Lancers Regiment, and was promoted to Chief of the Military History Section of the General Staff in 1884, Deputy Chief of Staff in 1888, Chief of Staff in 1891, and Field Marshal in 1911. As Chief of Staff, he worked on creating operational plans for France and Russia and training staff officers, and was known as a brilliant chief of staff. His tactical theory was widely studied throughout America and Europe, and had a great influence.
