This rock name was originally proposed as a group name including gabbro, diabase, and diabase [Senft: 1857], but was later used in France for leucobasalt rich in the mineral labradorite (labrador in French), and for labradorite andesite (basalt that does not contain olivine) [Fouque & Michel-Levy: 1879]. In Russia, it was used for leucobasic rocks of gabbro to norite, such as anorthite.
