Kenchu Adachi

Japanese: 安達憲忠 - あだちけんちゅう

1857-1930 A social worker from the Meiji to Taisho era.
Born on August 3, 1851. Studied at the Ihokan in Okayama and participated in the Freedom and People's Rights Movement as a newspaper journalist. In 1891, at the recommendation of Eiichi Shibusawa, the director of the Tokyo Municipal Orphanage, he became an executive officer at the institution. He contributed to reforms at the institution, such as the development of the foster parent system and the isolation and treatment of infectious diseases, as well as the establishment of a free lodging facility. Died on December 2, 1930. Age 74. Born in Bizen (Okayama Prefecture). His works include "The Worsening Situation of Poor Children" and "Poverty or Wealth?"

安政4年8月3日生まれ。岡山の遺芳館にまなび,新聞記者として自由民権運動に参加。明治24年東京市養育院院長渋沢栄一のすすめで同院幹事となる。里親制度の開拓や伝染病の隔離療養など同院の改革のほか,無料宿泊所の創設などにつくした。昭和5年12月2日死去。74歳。備前(岡山県)出身。著作に「窮児悪化の状況」「貧か富か」。
