Born November 22, 1909. Older brother of Umezawa Hamao. After serving as an assistant professor at Hokkaido University, he became a professor at Keio University in 1944. In 1944, he became director of the Institute of Bioorganic Chemistry. In 1944, he extracted penicillin with his brother Hamao. He also succeeded in synthesizing aminoglycoside antibiotics such as kanamycin and streptomycin. In 1980, he received the Academy Prize. He was president of the Chemical Society of Japan. He passed away on March 30, 2000. He was 90 years old. He was born in Tokyo. He graduated from Hokkaido Imperial University. His works include "Experimental Organic Chemistry."
