Sumio Umezawa

1909－2000 An organic chemist from the Showa to Heisei eras.
Born November 22, 1909. Older brother of Umezawa Hamao. After serving as an assistant professor at Hokkaido University, he became a professor at Keio University in 1944. In 1944, he became director of the Institute of Bioorganic Chemistry. In 1944, he extracted penicillin with his brother Hamao. He also succeeded in synthesizing aminoglycoside antibiotics such as kanamycin and streptomycin. In 1980, he received the Academy Prize. He was president of the Chemical Society of Japan. He passed away on March 30, 2000. He was 90 years old. He was born in Tokyo. He graduated from Hokkaido Imperial University. His works include "Experimental Organic Chemistry."

明治42年11月22日生まれ。梅沢浜夫の兄。北大助教授などをへて昭和19年慶大教授となる。49年生物有機化学研究所長。19年弟の浜夫とともにペニシリンを抽出。さらにカナマイシン,ストレプトマイシンなどのアミノ配糖体抗生物質の合成に成功した。55年学士院賞。日本化学会会長。平成12年3月30日死去。90歳。東京出身。北海道帝大卒。著作に「実験有機化学」など。
