The term refers to the three South American countries of Argentina, Uruguay, and Paraguay. The La Plata River system (La Plata River) is one of the three major river systems in South America, along with the Amazon and the Orinoco. Its tributaries include the Pilcomayo River, the Bermejo River, the Paraguay River, the Paraná River, and the Uruguay River, and its drainage basin extends beyond the three countries mentioned above, as well as Brazil and Bolivia. However, since Brazil is mainly part of the Amazon system and Bolivia has strong ties with the Andean countries, it is not usually included in the La Plata countries.
