Eripandus - Eripandus

...This belief is supported by the legend that James preached in Iberia, and that after his martyrdom in Jerusalem, his disciples carried his body to Iberia and buried it there, but this legend is not supported by any documents and is difficult to accept as historical fact. For the time being, it is thought that the trigger for this unique belief was the atmosphere of the times, which intersected with the almost hopeless survival situation of the early Asturian Kingdom, the pressure from the Muslims of Al-Andalus who abandoned their initial tolerant policy and began to adopt a severe and confrontational stance, the religious controversy sparked by the heresy of Toledo Archbishop Elipandus (c. 718-c. 802) that Christ was adopted by God, and the political unification of Western Europe by Charlemagne. It is true that in this era, the weak and unstable Asturias was under pressure to strengthen its royal authority with its own church organization.
