The Ottoman Empire's standing infantry guard corps, which were made up of conscripted Christian children from conquered European territories, who were converted and trained. They achieved military success in the wars of conquest between the 14th and 16th centuries and contributed greatly to the territorial development of the empire, but later broke military discipline and became warlords, leading to their abolition in 1826.
