Hachimantai

Japanese:
Hachimantai

A shield volcano that spreads across the border of Akita and Iwate prefectures. In the narrow sense, Hachimantai refers to the area called the summit of Hachimantai, which is 1,613 meters above sea level, but in a broader sense, it refers to the plateau-like mountain range that includes volcanoes such as Chausu-dake (1,578 meters) to the east of the summit of Hachimantai, and Yake-san (1,366 meters) to the west. Beech forests are abundant at an altitude of 600 meters, but above 1,000 meters, it becomes a sea of Aomoritodomatsu (Maries' fir) trees. Because the terrain is flat and there is nothing to block the seasonal winds, Aomoritodomatsu grows poorly and has a flattened shape. To the east of the summit of Hachimantai, there are many small swamps such as Hachimantai-numa and Gama-numa, which are crater lakes, and the surrounding area is a marshland. Asian skunk cabbage and Shirane-aoi can be seen. Near Mosen Pass between Mount Yakeyama and Tsugamori to the east, plant communities including black crowberry and cowberry can be seen.

The view from the summit of Hachimantai is magnificent, and Mount Iwate, Mount Komagatake, and other mountains can be seen. The Hachimantai Aspite Line road (closed in winter) runs from east to west, making it relatively easy to explore the plateau. Hachimantai hot spring resorts include Toshichi, Goshogake, and Toroko, and you can enjoy spring ski tours using these hot springs as a base. In winter, snow can exceed five meters and frost-covered trees form. It is one of the centers of Towada-Hachimantai National Park.
