Moso bamboo (Moso bamboo) - Phyllostachys heterocycla var. pubescens; bamboo shoot
A species of the genus Phyllostachys in the Poaceae family. Native to China, it was introduced to Japan via the Ryukyu Islands long ago, and is now a common bamboo cultivated throughout Japan. The culms are thick and long, sometimes exceeding 20m. They branch densely, and the leaves are lanceolate and about 10cm long. They rarely bloom, but the entire plant bears countless flowers, which are gathered in overlapping, cylindrical cotyledons. They are distinguished from other bamboos by their short internodes and single-ringed nodes. They are cultivated for food, as their bamboo shoots are large and tasty. The culms are thick, so they are used for all kinds of building materials and utensils. The bamboo bark is used for packaging.
