Climate classification

Japanese: 気候分類（英語表記）classification of climate

A classification created by Köppen and Thornthwaite of the different climates around the world based on their characteristics. Köppen's classification combined factors such as the annual mean temperature, the average temperatures of the coldest and warmest months, and annual precipitation. Thornthwaite introduced the concept of potential evapotranspiration, calculating wetness and dryness coefficients from the monthly water balance surplus or deficiency, and proposing a climate classification based on this. There are several other classifications, including Kawakita and Yoshira's introduction of a warmth index and a coldness index, and Alisov's classification, which emphasizes the general atmospheric circulation.

ケッペンやソーンスウェイトによってなされた，地球上の各地の異なる気候をその特徴によって分類すること．ケッペンは年平均気温と最寒月，最暖月の平均気温，年降水量などを組み合わせた分類を行った．ソーンスウェイトは蒸発散位の概念を導入し，毎月の水収支の過不足から，湿潤係数と乾燥係数を計算して，これに基づく気候分類を提案した．このほか川喜田と吉良による暖かさの指数と寒さの指数の導入，大気大循環を重視するアリソフの分類など数種類の分類がある．
