The capital of Buenos Aires Province in central-eastern Argentina. Population 520,647 (1991). Located 5 km from the mouth of the Rio de la Plata River. After Buenos Aires became the federal capital in 1880, it was selected as the new capital in 1882. Following an urban plan modeled on Washington, DC, the city was built with water supply, sanitation facilities, parks, and wide roads, and was the first in the country to introduce a public electric lighting system.
