The capital of Buenos Aires Province in central-eastern Argentina. Population 520,647 (1991). Located 5 km from the mouth of the Rio de la Plata River. After Buenos Aires became the federal capital in 1880, it was selected as the new capital in 1882. Following an urban plan modeled on Washington, DC, the city was built with water supply, sanitation facilities, parks, and wide roads, and was the first in the country to introduce a public electric lighting system. The city's population rapidly grew from 7,672 (1882) to 90,000 (1914).

アルゼンチンの中央東部，ブエノス･アイレス州の州都。人口52万0647(1991)。ラ･プラタ河口から5kmの地点に位置する。1880年ブエノス･アイレス市が州都から連邦首都になった後，82年新たな州都に選定された。アメリカ合衆国のワシントンD.C.に範を得た都市計画にそって水道，衛生設備，公園，道幅の広い道路が建設され，また全国に先駆けて公共電灯システムが導入された。同市の人口は7672人(1882)から9万人(1914)へと急増した。
