Hizaka - Nissaka

Japanese: 日坂 - にっさか
Hizaka - Nissaka
A post station in the province of Totomi. It is currently located in Hizaka, Kakegawa City, Shizuoka Prefecture. It was called Nishizaka because it was located west of Sayo-no-Nakayama, one of the difficult spots on the Tokaido road (the border between present-day Kakegawa City and Kanaya Town, Shizuoka Prefecture (present-day Shimada City)). It later became Hizaka. In travel writings from the Onin and Bunmei Wars to the Sengoku period, it appears as Nishizaka, Hizaka, and Shinzaka. It was designated as a post station on the Tokaido road in 1601. According to the Tokaido Shukumura Daigaichou (General Register of Tokaido Post Towns), the townscape stretched over six blocks from east to west, with a population of 750 and 168 houses, including one honjin (main inn), one wakihonjin (secondary inn), and 33 inns. Warabimochi (bracken-straw rice cakes) are known as the specialty of the post station. In 1955, it became part of the Oaza district of Kakegawa City.
