It is the Latin name of Lazio, a region in central Italy. In contrast to modern Lazio, which spreads north and south from Rome, ancient Latium was originally a region of about 1,200 square kilometers south of the Tiber River (now the Tiber River) stretching from Tibur (now Tivoli) to the Tyrrhenian Sea ("Old Latium"), and originally referred to the area inhabited by Latin peoples. After the 5th century BC, the territories of the Volsci, Aequi, Hernici, etc. became "Extended Latium", and Latium came to border Campania. After the Latin War in 338 BC, most of the region was annexed to the Roman state. Since becoming the base of the secular power of the Pope in the 6th century, it was a core part of the Papal States throughout the Middle Ages, but was annexed to the Kingdom of Italy in 1870.
