A port city on the northern east coast of Leyte Island in the eastern Visayan Islands of the Philippines. It is the capital of Leyte Province and lies at the head of San Pedro Bay, which opens into Leyte Gulf. It is the commercial center of the eastern Visayan Islands, with the fertile agricultural areas of the Leyte Plain and the southeastern part of Samal Island across the San Juanico Strait as its hinterland. It exports hemp, copra, and timber. It is also a large fishing port. During World War II, American troops landed on Leyte Island and made it the capital of the Commonwealth of the Philippines until they recaptured Manila. Population: 138,000 (1990 estimate).
