An annual plant of the Amaranthaceae family, cultivated for food and ornamental purposes. Also known as 'Old Spearhead'. Native to South America, it is said to have been cultivated in mountainous regions since around 4000 BCE. It is cultivated in many countries around the world for ornamental purposes, but it is thought that only a few cultivars are used for food. In the 19th century, it was introduced to the mountainous regions of Nepal and India, and then to Africa, where it has become a staple food crop. The plant is 1-2m tall. It has long, drooping flower clusters, and is rich in color and shape. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
