〘Noun〙① To learn from the heart. [Han Yu - Summer Couplets]② Refers to the lineage of the academic thought of Chinese philosophers Lu Xiangshan and Wang Yangming. Also called Yangmingism or the study of conscience, it is a philosophy of cultivating the inner mind and approaching sainthood through practice. In Japan, Kumazawa Banzan, who lived around the Kan'ei to Meireki eras ( 1624-58 ), is famous for this. ※Nobunagaki (1622), 15th subsection: "Gakudo (abbreviated): Even though the age of the emperor has lasted many years, the most precious sword and vessel of Japan is ri-gaku (science and psychology) ."③ Refers to Sekimon Shingaku (Sekimon Shingaku) of the Edo period. A doctrine of practical morality that harmonizes and integrates the teachings of Wang Yangming of the Ming Dynasty in China with the principles of Shinto and Buddhism. Its purpose is to teach how to correct the mind and improve oneself using simple words and common metaphors. During the Kyoho era ( 1716-36 ), Ishida Baigan of Kyoto first preached it, and during the Tenmei era ( 1781-89 ), Teshima Toan and Nakazawa Doji popularized it.

〘名〙① 心から学ぶこと。〔韓愈‐納涼聯句〕② 中国の哲学者、陸象山・王陽明の学術の系統をいう。陽明学とも良知の学ともいい、内なる心を修養し、実践によって聖人に近づこうとする思想。日本では寛永～明暦（一六二四‐五八）頃の熊沢蕃山が有名。※信長記（1622）一五下「学道〈略〉君が代のいくひさしくもさかへなん和器宝剣は理学心学(シンカク)」③ 江戸時代、石門心学(せきもんしんがく)のこと。中国、明の王陽明の学説に、神道・仏教の趣旨を調和総合した実践道徳の教義。心を正しくし身を修めることを、平易なことばや通俗な比喩で説くことを目的とする。享保（一七一六‐三六）の頃、京都の石田梅巖がはじめて唱えだし、天明（一七八一‐八九）の頃、手島堵庵、中沢道二により大いに世に行なわれた。※黄表紙・心学早染艸（1790）上「此ごろはしんがくとやらがはやるから、おゐらが住居をするやふな」
