A deciduous shrub or small tree of the Ericaceae family. It is found in the temperate zone of eastern Asia. In Japan, it grows in sunny mountainous areas of Honshu, Shikoku, and Kyushu. Its name comes from the twisted trunk. The leaves are alternate, stalked, long ovate, 4-12 cm long, and hairy on both sides. Japanese species have smaller leaves than those on the continent, and are sometimes considered a variant or subspecies. In May and June, it grows 4-6 cm racemes and bears rows of white, urn-shaped flowers that hang downward.
