…The Dharma-sutras are mostly about religious duties, such as daily religious practices, purification and atonement, and the rights and duties in each of the four āśrama periods, but also contain some parts that correspond to civil and criminal law, such as family law and court and litigation provisions. They are believed to have been gradually established from around 500 B.C., and several versions are known today, including the Āpastamba-dharmasūtra and the Baudhāyana-dharmasūtra. All of them are written in an extremely simple style called sūtra style, which systematically arranges only the main points, and some of them contain verse, but many of the verse parts are thought to have been added later. …
