A roofless platform with a railing that is extended from the wall of a building on the second floor or higher. It can also refer to seats in theaters that are higher than the main floor and protrude forward from the wall, or to a raised platform with a railing in a stage set. Balconies in residential buildings are often used in southern Europe and southwestern Asia, where the number of windows is small compared to the walls. In houses surrounded by thick, wide walls to block the harsh rays of the sun, windows are the only part that comes into contact with nature, so people pay great attention to them and decorate them with flowers and skillfully crafted grilles. Balconies can also be seen as a variation of this window. In Western Europe, a balcony refers to a relatively short one, while long, reinforced concrete ones are called terraces to distinguish them. In Japan, as apartment and condominium living has become more common in recent years, balconies have become increasingly common because they are separated from nature and the earth on the upper floors.
