Born: 1595. Bologna Died June 10, 1654. Rome. Italian sculptor and architect. He entered the school of L. Carracci in Bologna and learned sculpture from J. Cesare. He served the Duke of Mantua for a time, but in 1625, he was introduced by the Duke and went to Rome. At first, he mainly worked on the restoration of ancient sculptures. He created works such as "San Filippo Neri" (1640), "Tomb of Pope Leo XI" (c. 1645), and the Villa Doria Pamphili on Janiculum Hill (c. 1644). He was highly valued by Pope Innocent X and, together with Bernini, became an artist for the Papal Court. He sculpted "Pope Leo Pursuing Attila" (50) at the Pope's command, as well as many other Baroque sculptures and the exterior of the Basilica of San Inizio, demonstrating a classical style that suppressed Bernini's tendency toward splendor and painting.
