It is an acute, transient mental abnormality seen among the Malays, characterized as a crisis reaction, and consists of increased suggestibility, echolalia, command automatism, coprolalia, stereotyped language, etc. The symptoms belong to the primitive hysterical reaction, and include signs of catatonic excitement, but these are generally common to abnormal reactions known by various names, such as Latha, Mari Mari in the Philippines, Yaung Da Chin Yoga in Myanmar, and Yim among the Ainu, and therefore today it is collectively referred to as a culture-bound syndrome.
