A movement that has been undertaken since the end of the 19th century by the United States and Latin American countries to strengthen mutual ties in the Americas. After World War II, a regional cooperation system was formed centered on the Organization of American States (OAS). The idea of the nations of the Americas being one and the movement for concrete integration had already emerged in the early 19th century through the Monroe Doctrine and the Panama Conference, which was held at the initiative of S. Bolivar, but it was with the First International Conference of American States, held in Washington from late 1889 to early 1890, at the initiative of the United States, that the Pan-American movement really took shape.

アメリカ大陸において，19世紀の末以来，アメリカ合衆国とラテン･アメリカ諸国とが相互の結びつきを強化するために進めてきた運動。第2次世界大戦後には米州機構(OAS)を中心とした地域的な協力体制を形成している。アメリカ大陸の諸国が一体であるという思想や具体的な統合をめざした動きはすでに19世紀初めのモンロー主義や，S.ボリーバルの提唱で開かれたパナマ会議を通じて現れていたが，パン･アメリカ主義の運動が具体的な形をとりはじめたのは，合衆国の提唱で1889年末から翌年初めにかけてワシントンで開かれた第1回米州諸国会議International Conference of American Stateであった。
