Cap rock. An impermeable rock layer such as shale that is found above oil, gas, or hydrothermal deposits and serves to prevent the diffusion of oil, gas, or hydrothermal water. In landslide areas, it also refers to the rock layer that is above the slide surface and contains a large amount of groundwater.
