Cap rock. An impermeable rock layer such as shale that is found above oil, gas, or hydrothermal deposits and serves to prevent the diffusion of oil, gas, or hydrothermal water. In landslide areas, it also refers to the rock layer that is above the slide surface and contains a large amount of groundwater. It can also refer to materials other than rock salt, such as anhydrite and limestone, at the top of salt columns in salt domes.

帽岩とも。石油や天然ガス，地熱鉱床で，油層やガス層，熱水層の上部にあって石油，ガス，熱水の拡散を防ぐ役目をするケツ岩などの不透過性岩層。また地すべり地帯ではすべり面の上位にあり地下水を多量に含む岩層をさす。なお岩塩ドームの岩塩柱頭部にある硬セッコウ，石灰岩など岩塩以外の物質をさすこともある。
