…Hermes fell in love with the goddess Aphrodite but was rejected, and Zeus, feeling sorry for him, transformed himself into an eagle and stole one of Aphrodite's sandals and gave it to him, so that his love was fulfilled. A similar legend is also told by Strabo, in which one of Rhodope's sandals, stolen by an eagle, fell on the chest of the Egyptian king Psammetichus, who then searched throughout the country for its owner. Both stories link footwear with the fulfillment of love, and the latter also links the theme of identity verification, which is interesting because it suggests a commonality with Cinderella's glass slipper and the sexual symbolism of footwear. …
