Barefoot Rebellion - Rasoku no Ran

Japanese: 裸足の乱 - らそくのらん
Barefoot Rebellion - Rasoku no Ran
A popular uprising that took place in 1639, mainly in the Lower Normandy region of northern France. In 1635, the French monarchy, which had joined the Thirty Years' War, forced a series of increases in various taxes, including the direct tax of the taille, and the allocation of compulsory urban loans in order to raise funds for the war, which had been growing as the war dragged on. These increases violated the customary privileges of the regions, and local residents resisted by not paying taxes and engaging in smuggling. Against this backdrop, on July 16, 1639, on market day in Avranches, Lower Normandy, local farmers and fishermen gathered in the surrounding area and killed an official, mistaking him for a salt tax collector.
