1583‐1633 Dutch painter. Born and died in Amsterdam. He was influenced by Elsheimer and Caravaggio while studying in Italy, and after returning to Japan, he overcame Mannerism by painting religious and historical themes that were based on naturalistic depictions but had a strong narrative character. It is also well known that Rembrandt, who had completed his training in his hometown of Leiden, studied under him for six months and was fundamentally influenced by him. For this reason, painters of the same tendency, including the Pynas brothers who were active in Amsterdam at the same time, are generally called the Pre-Rembrandtists.
