Dutch painter. Born and died in Amsterdam. He was influenced by Elsheimer and Caravaggio while studying in Italy, and after returning to Japan, he overcame Mannerism by painting religious and historical themes that were based on naturalistic depictions but had a strong narrative character. It is also well known that Rembrandt, who had completed his training in his hometown of Leiden, studied under him for six months and was fundamentally influenced by him. For this reason, painters of the same tendency, including the Pynas brothers who were active in Amsterdam at the same time, are generally called the Pre-Rembrandtists.

オランダの画家。アムステルダムに生まれ同地で没。イタリア留学中にエルスハイマーおよびカラバッジョから感化を受け，帰国後，自然主義的描写に基づきつつも物語的性格がきわめて強い宗教的･歴史的主題の絵画を描いてマニエリスムを克服した。故郷ライデンでの修業を終えたレンブラントが彼のもとで6ヵ月間学んで根本的な影響を受けたことでも有名。このため彼を筆頭に同じころアムステルダムで活躍したピナスPynas兄弟ら同傾向の画家を一般に〈レンブラント前派〉と呼ぶ。
