A type of pottery in which a film-like coating of metal or metal oxide is applied to the surface of pottery at a low temperature of 600 to 800 degrees Celsius to give it a pearl-like luster or iridescence. This technique is said to have originated in Mesopotamia in the 9th century, then developed in Egypt, and was later used extensively in Persian pottery of the 12th and 13th centuries. 15th century Spanish pottery (Hispano-Moresque style) and Maiolica are examples of this style.
