A deciduous tall tree of the Fagaceae family (APG classification: Fagaceae). Its morphology is similar to that of the Sawtooth Oak. The bark is deeply incised vertically, and the cork layer is well developed and elastic, giving it the nickname of Cotton Oak, which is considered a substitute for cork. The undersides of the leaves are covered with dense stellate hairs and are gray-white in color. The nuts are nearly egg-shaped, with many parts exposed from the cupule, which distinguishes it from the Sawtooth Oak. Male inflorescences sometimes appear from the tops of the previous year's branches. It grows in the warm-weather zone west of Yamagata Prefecture, Shikoku, and Kyushu, and is widely distributed from Korea to China. The wood is heavy and of good quality, and it has the same uses as the Sawtooth Oak. "Abe" is a dialect word for burrs in Okayama Prefecture.
