A perennial plant of the Brassicaceae family native to China, known as Jiangnan daqing, contains indigo and was apparently used as a dye along with indigo. It was introduced from China during the Edo period and planted in Koishikawa Botanical Garden, which was a shogunate botanical garden. Nearly 30 species of the Isatis genus have been reported from Asia, Europe, and Africa, but it is a difficult group to classify and there seems to still be a great deal of confusion. I. tinctoria L. (dyer's-woad) is a biennial plant native to Europe and Southwest Asia and, like Isatis, was used as a dye. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
