Thessaloniki was originally called Thessalonika in Greek and Latin. It was founded in 316 BC by the then ruler of Macedonia, Cassandros, who built the city of Thessaloniki around Thermē, located at the end of the Gulf of Thermae in eastern Macedonia, and named it after his wife. It developed as a key point of land and sea transport. When Macedonia became a Roman province in 146 BC, it was chosen as its capital. During the Roman Principate period, it was granted free city status and flourished. Under Emperor Theodosius, it was made the capital of the Illyric Way, and under Emperor Justinian, it was given the status of the second capital of the Byzantine Empire after Constantinople, reaching the height of its prosperity. *Some of the terminology that mentions "Thermē" is listed below.
