Danish plant ecologist and professor at the University of Copenhagen. In 1907, he developed a method of classifying plant life forms based on the position of dormant buds, which is still widely used today. Plants are classified as subterranean, above-ground, or underground based on the position of their dormant buds relative to the ground surface during the cold or dry season. He also expressed the composition of plant communities in each region in terms of the proportion of each life form, and created a standard table of life forms.

デンマークの植物生態学者。コペンハーゲン大学教授。1907年に休眠芽の位置に基づいて植物の生活形を分類する方法を創始し，この分類法が今日まで広く用いられている。植物が寒季あるいは乾季を過ごすさいに休眠芽が地表にたいして占める位置を基準にして，植物を地中･地上･地下植物などに分類するというものである。さらに彼は各地域ごとの植物群落の構成を，それぞれの生活形が占める割合によって表現し，生活形標準表を作成した。
