A general term for insects belonging to the Hemiptera family, Tettigellidae, or one of these species. Approximately 10 species are known from Japan, and they are similar to Cicadella species, but many of them are slightly larger. They are distinguished by having an eye on the top of their head. The most common species is the giant leafhopper, Cicadella viridis (illustration). The body length is about 10 mm, and the color is usually green, but some individuals are yellow or blue. 半翅目オオヨコバイ科Tettigellidaeに属する昆虫の総称,またはそのうちの1種を指す。日本より約10種が知られ,ヨコバイ科の種によく似ているが,やや大型のものが多い。単眼が頭部の上部にある点で区別される。もっともふつうな種がオオヨコバイCicadella viridis(イラスト)である。体長は10mm内外,色彩は緑色がふつうだが,黄色あるいは青色を帯びる個体もある。おもに雑草中に生活する。
