Okada Tamechika

A painter of the revival Yamato-e school at the end of the Edo period. Born in Kyoto as the third son of the painter Kano Eitai. Eigaku, a painter of the Kyoto Kano school at the end of the Edo period, was Tameyasu's uncle. His childhood names were Shinzo and Saburo, and his given name was Eiga. Shortly after his father Eitai's death, he took the surname Reizei, but in 1850 (Kaei 3), he purchased a share of the stock of Okada Dewa-no-kami, a member of the Kurodo-shosho, and became his adopted son, taking the name Okada and changing his surname to Sugawara. In the same year, he was appointed Shikibu Dairoku with the rank of Jorokui (Sixth Rank), and in 1855 (Ansei 2), he was promoted to Shikibu Shojo. The following year, he became an attendant to the regent Kujo Naotada, was given the title of regent Naoro-yaku, and in the fifth year, he was promoted to Jugoi (Fifth Rank). In Bunkyu 2 (1862), he became the governor of Omi, but was suspected of being in league with the shogunate and declined the position. However, he subsequently became a target of pro-imperial samurai, so he sought refuge with his friend the monk Gankai at Kokawa-dera Temple in Kishu. However, he was eventually assassinated by a Choshu samurai and met an untimely end in Yamato Tamba (Tenri City). He initially learned painting from his father, but eventually became interested in Yamato painting, and worked hard to copy old paintings in the collections of famous ancient temples in Kyoto, establishing his own family. He was also well versed in court etiquette and customs, and one of his representative works is the sliding screen paintings at Daiju-ji Temple (Okazaki City, Aichi Prefecture). <References> Itoki Moriteru, "The Life of Reizei Tameyasu"

江戸末期の復古大和絵派の画家。画家狩野永泰の3男として京都に生まれる。幕末京狩野派の画家永岳は為恭の伯父。幼名を晋三,三郎,諱を永恭。父永泰の没後間もなく,自ら冷泉姓を名乗ったが,嘉永3(1850)年蔵人所衆岡田出羽守の株を購ってその養子となり,岡田氏を称し,姓を菅原と改めた。同年正六位下式部大録に叙任され,安政2(1855)年式部少丞に昇った。翌3年関白九条尚忠のお付きとなって関白直廬預と称し,5年従五位下に叙せられた。文久2(1862)年近江守となるが,幕府に通じているとの嫌疑をかけられ,官位を辞退したが,以後尊皇派の浪士に狙われるようになったため,親交を結んでいた僧願海をたよって紀州粉河寺に逃れる。しかし,ついに長州藩士の凶刃のため大和丹波(天理市)で非業の最期を遂げた。絵ははじめ父に学んだが,やがてやまと絵に興味を抱き,京都の古寺名刹の所蔵する古画の模写に努め,一家を成した。有職故実にも通じ,代表作に大樹寺(愛知県岡崎市)障壁画がある。<参考文献>逸木盛照『冷泉為恭の生涯』
