The head of an ancient Japanese clan. Also known as Uji no Osa or Shiso. In the pre-Taika period, they led clan members, managed the land and the people who were subordinate to the clan, represented the clan in imperial government, and were given clan names and surnames. Previously, this was a private matter, but after the Taika period, the clans were officially ordered through the clan leaders, with the clan leaders being established as Daishi, Koshi, and Tomo no Miyatsuko, and each leader was given a large sword or small knife. During the Ritsuryo period, the clan leader with the highest official rank was recognized as the clan leader, and was allowed to build a tomb in the same way as a third-rank or higher member. Furthermore, they consistently performed rituals for the clan god. During the Heian period, they were called Uji no Choja. Source : Heibonsha Encyclopedia About MyPedia Information |
