Japanese: ニットウェア（英語表記）knitwear

A general term for clothing made from knitted fabrics. There are hand knit fabrics, flat knit fabrics, circular knit fabrics, and warp knit fabrics. Woven fabrics are made by interlacing two series of threads, warp and weft, at right angles, while knitted fabrics are made by stitching together loops. There are two types of knitted fabrics: fabric knitting, which is cut and sewn like woven fabrics, and shaped knitting, which is made by using a pattern as a base, increasing or decreasing the number of stitches, knitting the pieces of knitted fabric, and then sewing them together to make the product.

編物で作られた衣類の総称。手編ニットhand knit fabric，横編ニットflat knit fabric，丸編ニットcirculer knit fabric，経編ニットwarp knit fabricがある。織物は経糸と緯糸の2系列の糸を直角に交錯させて作ったものであるが，編物はループloop(編環)の連綴によってできる布地であり，それを織物と同様に裁断し，縫製して製品を作る生地編と，直接パターンを基礎にしそれにあわせて編目を増減して編み上げ，その編地片をかがり合わせて製品とする成型編がある。
