Lauric acid - Laurinsan (English spelling) lauric acid

A saturated fatty acid. Also known as dodecanoic acid. It is found in vegetable oils such as coconut oil and bay laurel oil as lauric acid, a type of glyceride. The name lauric acid comes from the scientific name for bay laurel , Laurus nobilis L. It is obtained by esterifying the mixed fatty acids of coconut oil, distilling them under reduced pressure, and then saponifying them. It appears as white needle-like crystals and is insoluble in water, but is highly soluble in organic solvents such as ether and benzene. It is the raw material for lauryl alcohol, which is used in detergents and surfactants.

飽和脂肪酸の一つ。ドデカン酸ともよばれる。グリセリドの一種であるラウリンとして、やし油、ゲッケイジュの果肉油などの植物油中に含まれている。ラウリンの名はゲッケイジュの学名Laurus nobilis L.に由来する。やし油の混合脂肪酸をエステル化し、減圧下で分留したのち、けん化すると得られる。白色針状結晶で、水には溶けないが、エーテル、ベンゼンなどの有機溶剤にはよく溶ける。洗剤や界面活性剤に用いられるラウリルアルコールの原料となる。
