[raw]? [Died] 17th year of the Suizei Era (1644) A Chinese painter from the late Ming Dynasty. He was from Laiyang (Shandong Province) and lived in Beijing. His original name was Dan, and his literary name was Kaiyu, and he later changed his name to Zizhong and his literary name to Daomu. His pen names were Beihai and Qingbao. He was a Beijing native during the Chongzhen period (1628-1644). After the fall of the Ming Dynasty, he stayed in an earthen room and died of starvation. He was criticized for creating a new style by imitating the figure paintings of the Jin and Tang dynasties, but it is believed that he actually studied the works of private painters in the late Yuan and early Ming dynasties. He created his own style of figure painting, and was known as "Southern Chen, Northern Cui" along with his contemporary Chen Hongshou. His representative works include "Sending Guests to Xingyuan Garden" (Jing Yuanzhai Collection).
