Chemical formula: HF. At room temperature, it is a colorless, fuming liquid. The gas is colorless, and the solid is white. The density of the liquid is 1.0015 g/cm3 (0°C), and that of the solid is 1.658 g/cm3 (-87.2°C). Its melting point is -83.0°C, and its boiling point is 19.5°C. Due to the strong hydrogen bonds between molecules, its boiling point is unusually high, despite its low molecular weight. As a result, its apparent molecular weight in the gas form is much greater than 20, and is not constant depending on temperature or pressure. At 90°C, it has a value equivalent to HF, and at 32°C, it has a value intermediate between H 2 F 2 and H 3 F 3 . Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
