Abbreviation of Trans Europe Express. International express trains in Europe. Direct trains run between about 90 major cities in seven countries: France, Germany, Italy, Switzerland, the Netherlands, Belgium, and Luxembourg. Total length is about 10,000 km. Launched in 1956 to compete with airplanes and expressways.
